Max Sorensen, legal counsel and data privacy officer at LEGO Group, contributed his legal expertise on data privacy to a Casual Connect Europe panel on children’s online privacy. “If you look from a European perspective, data privacy and privacy is, in fact, a human right,” he said. To watch the entire panel discussion, see the video below.

Max Sorensen is legal counsel and data privacy officer at LEGO Group, one of the world’s leading producers of educational materials for children. Before joining the company, he worked as a litigation lawyer but wanted to be involved in the processes before issues reached the point of litigation. He was hired by LEGO Group specifically for the legal advice he could provide with respect to data privacy and marketing.

Collaborating to Create Exceptional Experiences

Working with LEGO Group gives him opportunities for collaborating with marketing colleagues to create exceptional digital experiences. He particularly enjoys working with a group with such outstanding values.

His experience as a litigation lawyer allows him to identify legal risks before litigation becomes necessary. The challenges of this position include finding ways to make legal terms understandable and to balance different legal requirements across varied geographies. Patenting presents an additional challenge. It can be expensive and difficult, but it is sometimes necessary.

From an early age it was Sorensen’s dream to be a lawyer and understand the legal mechanisms regulating our society. A major highlight in his career was being appointed to meet before the Supreme Court of Denmark.

The User Experience Comes to Life

In his experiences with the games industry through LEGO Group, he has discovered the fun of seeing the user experience come to life. It is fascinating to him to recognize how games can be used to educate children through play.

Sorensen has been focusing his attention on digital child safety in the European Union and American markets. He believes it will be essential to the future of the games industry to build trust between parents and game developers.

While Sorensen is not an avid gamer, he does enjoy playing from time to time. His favorite is the LEGO Hobbit game.

His top priority is his family, and traveling with them is something he especially enjoys. He also likes to spend his time watching sci-fi movies (a lot of sci-fi movies!) and listening to opera.
