'The lack of good hardware for the Chinese market is the main problem.' - Chenyu CuiClick To Tweet

With China’s console ban lifted and the growth of Android-based set-top boxes, TV games look like the new blue sea for games publishers and/or developers. However, due to younger players and SARFT censorship, sales are not encouraging. The exception in China is VR which has sparked a new industry passion for TV games. In this session from Casual Connect Asia, analyst for IHS Chenyu Cui discussed the VR market in China and shared IHS’ forecast of installed headsets and sales value. Chenyu explained, “The future Chinese VR market will be relatively small. Most of the future market will be made of adapter headset which doesn’t give good quality or a good experience. The lack of good hardware for the Chinese market is the main problem.” To learn more about VR in the Chinese market, watch this video of Chenyu’s complete session.

Chenyu Cui is an Analyst at IHS

Chenyu Cui, an analyst on the games team at IHS, was inspired to begin this career because of a passion for gaming; being an analyst is a way of getting closer to the overall game industry. And, fortunately, this position allows Chenyu to combine the fun of gaming with an interest in analysis.

Before changing career paths to become an analyst, Chenyu was a journalist, and finds this experience still helpful today; it led to developing valuable interview skills and the ability to expand personal connections and relationships. The process of moving in a new direction included earning a Master of Arts Degree in Cultural and Creative Industries from Kings College, London and completing an internship with IHS. And in 2012 Chenyu joined the company.

Markets, Games and Trends

Chenyu’s responsibilities include coverage of all Asia Pacific markets with emphasis on China. Their work includes analysis of massively multi-player online games, session-based multi-player games and mobile games. And, as part of the industry trend in this direction, virtual reality and TV games are also part of the research. In fact, Chenyu believes the most important trend of the future in gaming is VR.

Following trends in the games industry is actually the greatest challenge in Chenyu’s work, simply because the rate of change is so rapid. Constant communication with other insiders seems to be the best way to keep up.

Bringing Success for Clients

The achievement that brought Chenyu the greatest satisfaction in this career came with finishing, for the first time, a custom project that brought business success to a client. Team work and hard work were the essential factors leading to this accomplishment.

Chenyu is absorbed in several interests when not occupied with work. These include Japanese anime and manga, as well as travel. In fact, if not absorbed in working as an analyst, travel agent would be their preferred career.
