The GTP Indie Cup: Our Story

September 28, 2016 — by Industry Contributions

By Igor Pospishny

We want to congratulate the winner of the first GTP Indie Cup: The Uncertain. We were thrilled to be able to work with the guys from ComonGames make their dream come true. It was one of outstanding projects among other applied games. Here’s how we made the GTP Indie Cup happen and chose our winner.

Making the Decision

f8b88a79b8fd488791e0242ec39e5d83While there have been a few small game events in Ukraine, there have been a few bigger or significant events that will attract the indie game developers and studios who operate in the region. There are lots of developers and studios based here, many of whom are not aware of one another, simply because they have no functioning, thriving community like the ones many other areas of the world have. Particularly, there is no way for small developers to get in touc with big studios and publishers. This is why we decided to start our first GTP Indie Cup this spring.

We were surprised, when director of Indie Prize scholarship Yuliya Moshkaryova gave us a partnership opportunity with Indie Prize at Casual Connect Tel Aviv 2016. Getting that partnership was pure magic and it went a long way to making sure we could make this idea a reality.

Throughout the month following that partnership, we worked hard to do just that and we actually did it! During the month that submissions were open, more than seventy-five projects applied! It then took a week for the jury to go through all of those projects and choose one to be the winner. The Uncertain was the clear winner! Its team is now going to Tel Aviv, along with the world’s other leading independent developers.

How Robots are Born?

Artem Netyagin, project manager of The Uncertain, has made lots of games with Unity over the last six years. Inspired by incredible games from Sierra and Lucas Arts-games like “Space Quest”, “Day of the Tentacle” and “The Dig”,- Artem finally start working on an adventure game of his own.

His main goal was a release on the Android platform and custom Unity assets to develop and create the game. Though he spent a great deal of time on development, he did’t have a clear story idea or plot for the game. Most of his time and effort went into customizing the game mechanics. Here is a look at one of the first shots of the game:

The longer he worked on it, the better the project became, especially when it came to post effects. The desire to release it on Android became a problem, however. The mobile platform couldn’t handle the deep atmosphere of post-apocalyptic world Artem had built. The Uncertain became a PC project. After working solo for most of 2015, Artem met Alexey Surkov, who offered to help in an investment capacity. Together they went to an indie conference where on of the showcase guys from ComonGames saw the project and liked it. This meeting was decisive for the future of The Uncertain. Artem and Alex found not only investors but also their future “home”. They soon became an essentional part of ComonGames.

Say Hello to RT-217NP

The main character of the game is an advanced robot-inventor RT-217NP. He much starts out knowing almost nothing about the world around him. You will see the world through his digital eyes. You are asked to make moral choices in a world with no concept of morality. Every decision made in the game is binary, and sometimes the decisions themselves are devoid of common sense.

The developers worked tireless to make something truly special and unique. The binary logic doesn’t mean that you play a linear game. Your choices really do affect the game, and The Uncertain gives you a chance to test your puzzle-solving and adaptability skills. You have to learn to think like a real robot.

The Uncertain has already passed through Stream Greenlight, in just eleven days, receiving an extremely high ratio of “Pro” votes. The game was featured at E3, White Nights Indie Game Cup, and DevGamm in 2015 and GamesCon in 2016, in addition to being the winner of the GTP Indie Cup in 2016. After more than a year and a half in development, the game went live on the 22nd of September!

The Uncertain is a classic 3D Adventure in a science-fiction and post-apocalyptic setting, developed by ComonGames in Moscow, Russia, and was released this September. Don’t forget to check out the latest news about the project on Facebook or game’s website! We hope you will enjoy playing this game as much as we enjoyed watching it grow from idea to finished product!
