AuraVisor, a VR platform currently raising money on Kickstarter, has announced that it will add a front-facing camera to its design.
In a press release, AuraVisor CEO James Talbot is quoted as saying “The front-facing camera allows the user to keep the headset on if they need to move around or see something in front of them (a person, phone, etc.).”

Talbot also mentions educational and AR applications for the camera, such as using the visor to augment museum tours or books.
The camera feature was originally planned as a £350,000 stretch goal, but was announced on Friday as the campaign neared £110,000 with 11 days to go. The original goal of £100,000 was met in just over a week.
Development of hand gesture recognition software utilizing the front-facing camera is still listed as the £500,000 stretch goal.

AuraVisor touts its independence of a connected smartphone or PC as one of its main advantages over competitors like Oculus, Samsung Gear and the HTC/Valve Vive. Instead, all hardware and the Android-based OS needed to run the machine are built-in (plus a bundled but not-strictly-required Bluetooth game controller).
