In Brett’s session at Casual Connect Europe, he illustrated multiple modes of delivering novelty to players, describing how they capture and retain players’ attention. Brett also provided a framework for designing games around these modes, using them to accommodate multiple player preferences. As examples of meeting these preferences, Brett says, “Agency gives players freedom to do anything in the world” while “Connection keeps players plugged in to each other.” And designing for phones and tablets is especially wise, since these devices “rock all aspects save immersion.”

Properly applied, this framework will allow designers to expand the addressable audience for their game or to design with greater appeal to a well-understood target audience. To learn more about the framework and how to use it, watch this video of Brett’s full session.
